Adam's 99th kiss
Inspiration: Bluebottle Kiss gig Created: Wed 12 Mar 2003 15:04 View in current style Permalink Despite spending the better part of Thursday, Friday and Saturday vomiting, sleeping, and feeling sorry for myself (not necessarily in that order), I didn't want to miss out on the Adam Said Galore, Ninetynine and Bluebottle Kiss gig at Revolver Upstairs on Saturday night. And miss it I didn't!

Revolver Upstairs is a top little place to hang out if you're feeling a bit under the weather. There's lots to look at, and it's easy to relax. As Adam Said Galore ambled up on stage, I was kicking back in a comfy chair with a cool glass of post-mix cola on the handy coffee table beside me. To my right, blobs of colour danced on the walls and ceiling; all around there were pieces of art on the wall; and on the wall behind the band - if you don't like the look of them - there are projected movies showing (my favourite was of a gang of caterpillars all on some sort of mission to get somewhere by following each other in a very straight line).

Consider me duly distracted from all these visuals once Ninetynine took stage though. That Cameron certainly does know how to grab your attention. He drums like a mad thing; complete with whooping and hollering at his sheer enjoyment of playing the drums. The sort of enthusiasm he displays should probably be outlawed - even the rest of the Ninetynine gang would look around at him occasionally with bemused looks on their faces.

And then there's the fact that Ninetynine is one of those bands who decide that having twice as many instruments as people still isn't enough, and they need more, more, more! And that each and every band member is so freakishly talented that they can all play every one of the instruments (and they do, at various stages), making you think to yourself: "Hmmm, looks like they got my portion when musical talent was being handed out".

This is Bluebottle Kiss' first trip to Melbourne with new drummer Simon Fuhrer (the last trip being Richard Coneliano's last Melbourne gig at The Evelyn in September 2002). From the looks of things, Simon ain't subscribing to the Bluebottle Kiss uniform of the button-up shirt (and optional tie) - letting it all hang out in a simple white singlet for the latter part of the gig.

Could this lack of shirt have been the reason that the guy standing to the right of stage (in the blue long-sleeved t-shirt) felt it necessary to play the air-drums for the entire performance? Did he perhaps feel that the new drummer was inadequate in some way, and that, therefore, he himself should demonstrate how it's done (in a display that was almost as enthusiastic as Cameron from Ninetynine's was)? I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that this was, in fact, the case.
