Last night I went to see Neil Innes as part of the 2003 Melbourne Comedy Festival, who was part of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, was Ron Nasty in The Rutles, and hung out with Monty Python for a fair while (including playing on of the coolest characters in Holy Grail: Robin's Least Favourite Minstrel).

In a way, Neil's show was similar to Henry Rollins' show at the festival in 2001. Of course, in another way, it was completely and utterly different. The way that it was similar, though, was that even though it was part of a comedy festival, I wouldn't call it a comedy show. Sure, there were funny bits, but Neil wasn't up there with the sole purpose of making the audience laugh - he wasn't trying for a laugh every ten seconds. It was more about entertaining people, with a few laughs along the way.

The show basically consisted of Neil performing song after song, with amusing anecdotes and intros in between. Highlights were his rendition of Brave Sir Robin, and his Hitchhaiku song, which was a song with lyrics in the form of haiku. Plus, he wore a plastic duck on his head for part of it, and you can't go wrong with a plastic duck on your head.

Neil's show runs until April 12th, so if you're in Melbourne and are looking for a fun night out, you could do a lot worse. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.

P.S. Happy birthday Paul!
