Inspiration: Something for Kate

Back in another life, I was more than a little obsessed with Something for Kate. Anyone who knew me then can confirm this. I ran their website for a good three years, I listened to their music all day, I went to so many of their concerts that I lost track, I worked on the multimedia element of their Beautiful Sharks album (it was part of the fight against parallel importing, which, I believe, has since been lost), and I had (have?) the most comprehensive collection of SFK paraphernalia known to man.

With the impending release of the new Something for Kate album, Andrew and I struck upon a way to pass a few minutes; by creating a competition based around the lyrics of the new album - in much the same way as myself and my work buddies passed a few minutes late last year with my Amazon.com Holiday Delight-O-Meter game. Within a few minutes, we had figured out the basis of the competition, namely:

  • each of us would pick ten words
  • once the new album (The Official Fiction) is released, we will determine how many of our words are contained in the lyrics of the songs
  • whoever picks the most lyrics wins

Easy.

But, of course, there needed to be more rules than that:

  • if the word only appears in the already released single, Deja Vu, it's not counted, as we've already heard this song, so it'd be too easy (however, if it's a word that's in that song and another song, it's counted)
  • each word must be 5 letters or longer
  • the word must be in the lyrics - not just in the title (but it's okay for it to be in the title and the lyrics)
  • we each had until 5pm today to figure out what our words would be
  • no looking at somethingforkate.com until we have figured out our words
  • non-exact words are okay, but these will be at the discretion of our independent judge, who we then recruited (Paul) - e.g. if one of us picks the word "become", then "becoming" should be acceptable
  • 1 point per word, regardless of how many times it appears in the lyrics

And so, here are the words that each of us have chosen. May the best person win.

Nic's words Andrew's words
attorney
believe
constant
degree
equal

The results of the competition will have to wait until the release of the album; which is some time in late August. I'll be holding my breath. If you want to compete for the glory and prestige that can only be associated with knowing how Paul Dempsey's mind works, put your ten words into the comments.

Was it a dream or just a drunken haze - I think I was at a Something for Kate gig once a long time ago at the Punters when we all had to go and stand in the middle of Brunswick St because of a bomb scare - as if anyone would want to blow up the Punters! Was it Something for Kate playing at that stage or someone else?
Do I really care if my memory is right?
Still, I tell the story and accuracy is sometimes important.
