Further Gelbison
Hooray for free tickets to shows. Something for Kate sell out the Forum now, but I gotta say, it didn't seem very packed. They were ably supported by Further, who are a damn sight heavier than anyone I thought SFK would pick to be their support, and Gelbison, about whom I will just say that the drummer is married to Toni Collette, mainly because I'm sure that's the last thing they would want me to say about them.

Steph and Simon Paul and Clint
Things have certainly gotten slick with Something for Kate tours nowadays. They had 8 people on stage at one point, but hovered around 5 or 7 for most of the songs. Plus, they had moving images on a huge screen behind them for specific songs, like the top portion of a clock complete with moving hands for The Last Minute. Professional. I was really disappointed by the sound though. As it wasn't really packed, I kept on moving around to try and find a spot where I could both see, and where the sound mix would be just right, but it wasn't possible. If I went too close, the whole thing sounded too distorted to be enjoyable, and if I moved even a little bit further back, it was too quiet, and all I could hear were the people around me talking. I haven't had that happen at the Forum before, so I don't know what the story was.

Paul Steph, Clint and Pip
Audience stereotype spotted: the headbanger. This would have to be the funniest audience member I've seen in a long time. A headbanger is always funny, but a girl headbanger who also specialises in flailing her arms above her head and just generally moving about wildly is priceless. I think she had totally forgotten that she was in public, so transfixed by the band was she, and more than one person had to move away from her after they received a faceful of her hair on the upwards bang of her head.

Paul and Steph Phil
It seems Paul is over his self-imposed ban on playing Strategy, as this particular tune has apparently been a regular of late. He does it acoustically, with just his guitar and a piano accordian for accompaniment. This was a highlight of the evening, and I'm always up for a cover, so I also greatly enjoyed their version of David Bowie's Ashes To Ashes.

Paul with Louise Dempsey on backing vocals Steph and Clint
For a band that has a sound so instantly recognisable, their newer stuff, and the dynamic in their live performance, is amazingly different from what it used to be. The thread that always has and always will connect one song to another is Paul's voice, but if you disregard that, you may not be able to pick that some of these songs are by the same band as some of the others. With the addition of the strings section, there is an inevitable shift in the sound, and everything is a lot more polished. I enjoyed the evening, but not as much as I would have enjoyed a Something for Kate gig a couple of years ago.

Paul's green guitar with the blue and white circles in it looks like it comes from Ikea

Australian music is such a let down! If you honestly think about it nothing is as top quality as internaitonal stuff (bar perhaps delta goodrem). We ought to raise the bar, inform the bands that they aren't really all that hot - it's just that Australians are lazy and couldn't be bothered to inform people that they suck. Something for Kate is a let down. They are quite ordinary and personally I can't understand how they got this far...

I agree with Rachel. Something for Kate are pretty superficial and shallow. There's really nothing to them apart from that singer guy's voice and that's just a gimmick. I'm sure he doesn't really sing like that. It's just put on.
I prefer the international stuff like Sum 41, Alien Ant Farm and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

Vivid images. Are they manipulated or old fashioned dark room. Re: Andrew and Rachel, though I'm sure they're your mates, I'm becoming a little weary of middleaged idiologies.

They're just taken with a digital camera and then manipulated in good ol' Photoshop.

RE: Andrew, I think he was trying to be funny.

Superficial and shallow is not words I would associate with SFK. And I don't know if it possible to sing in a way you "don't sing like". Unless you think that all singers must only use one style of singing.

well i dont think anyone REALLY likes something for kate. their just a flavour of the month. everyone pretends they "get" them because it makes them look cool. there music sucks, its so slow and depressing! good bands like harvey danger are much more upbeat and fun.

I know that no one has posted anything here in a while but anyway been able to find a copy of ashes of ashes from the last SFK tour please help.. that song is fuking amazing... also wats the deal with australians always wanting to be american (or canadian) im so fuking sick of hearing the same old shit out of american its great to escape from the repetiton of US and canada.. its about time australia was an individual and stopped following everyone else.. australian music has made this country wat it is today.. australian music is original.. doesn't have to prove anything like american music.. we make music just for the sake of music and being artistic its not about the money and success in australia its about being true to ur self and expressing ur self... so american can go fuk a duk for all i care.. OZ music will always be in my heart

Hi Llama, I don't have a copy of the song at all, but I suggest going to http://sfkforthenovice.proboards.com/ and asking around there. There's lots of people there who are usually only too happy to help! Good luck finding it.
